Rift Valley Geysers, Kenya |
#M044-03 | |||||
Mineral-laden water fountains from geysers in
the Rift Valley, encouraging the proliferation of algae and tiny
crustaceans. Vast numbers of
flamingos are drawn to the rich food source; occasionally the birds venture too close and perish in the boiling water.
Flamingos, like baleen whales, are filter feeders - a way of life unusual among vertebrates and unique among the birds. Two species gather by the millions in the soda lakes of Africa’s Rift Valley to extract plankton from the alkaline waters; three more species inhabit the Americas. The birds in this view are Lesser Flamingos, Phoenicopterus minor. This photograph is available as a 16x24" signed print, archivally mounted and matted or archivally framed in black metal. Mounted size is 22"x30" (56x76 cm).
