The tree
with stilt roots is hala (Pandanus tectorius), a species native to
low altitudes on all the major Hawaiian islands. This tree was very useful
to Hawaiians in pre-contact times and is still valued as an ornamental.
Its fruit, though not especially palatable, served as an emergency food
source; the leaves were woven into products such as baskets and mats and
occasionally used to thatch roofs.
This photograph is available as a 11x16" signed print, archivally mounted and matted or archivally framed in black metal. Mounted size is 17"x22" (43x56 cm).
