Giant Baobabs (Adansonia grandidieri) |
#M122-06 | |||||
These majestic trees near Morondava are relics of a forest which was cleared centuries ago. They were probably spared because they were too big to chop down. The baobab's massive trunk stores water through the long dry season and can grow to over 30 feet (10 meters) in diameter. Unfortunately several of the remaining giants succumbed during a recent cyclone and the survivors are not reproducing well. The huge trees are nearly invulnerable when mature but seedlings fall victim to grazing cattle, saplings to slash and burn agriculture. In addition, at least in this area, the local people harvest nearly every fruit and crush the seeds to extract a high quality oil.
